Dresden lies in the upper valley of the Elbe and is the capital of the federal state of Saxony. Due to its architecture and rich museums, Dresden is often referred to as the Elb-Florence. Most of the historic town center was destroyed in 1945 and since the German reunification a lot of re-constructing has taken place in Dresden. The baroque town, almost 800 years old, is once more to become what it used to be: a center of culture and art.
 It was originally constructed in the early 18th century for a Saxony prince (Dresden is the capital of Saxony). Zwinger was a supreme example of the Baroque architectural style popular at the time.
Church of Our Lady. Germany's greatest Protestant church was reduced to jagged ruins after the infamous February 1945 Allied bombing raid. A painstaking reconstruction of the Baroque structure is under way, and it is hoped that it can be reconsecrated by the year 2006, the 800th anniversary of the founding of Dresden. The church has also evolved as a symbol of German-British reconciliation.
This imposing imperial structure houses one of Germany's great galleries. Named for the Saxon King Albert, who between 1884 and 1887 converted this former royal arsenal into a home for a vast collection of art and precious jewelry, its most famous exhibition is the extraordinary Grünes Gewölbe (Green Vaults), a dazzling collection of 16th- to 18th-century treasures: rococo chests, ivory carvings, jewelry, intricately designed mirrors, and priceless porcelain.
